Personal Post beta delivers news that matters most to the individual
The Washington Post today launches “Personal Post” in beta as a new way to experience The Washington Post online. Personal Post allows users to opt in to receive easy-to-scan headlines that are tailored to their interests, and is an important step in personalization for Washington Post users.
“Out of the tens of millions of readers that come to The Post every month we know that each one wants to consume a particular type of news. We have the breadth of stories, blogs, commentary, photos, graphics, video and more to satisfy these readers and now with the beta launch of Personal Post we’re giving them the opportunity to easily create and tune content streams according to their interests. We’re excited about the Personal Post launch as it reflects The Post’s commitment to experiment with and develop valuable and engaging news experiences,” said Katharine Zaleski, Executive Director of Digital News.
There are two ways to set up a Personal Post page. First, users who are registered with washingtonpost.com can visit Personal Post and sign up to receive Post content based on their reading history on washingtonpost.com. The more a user interacts with Personal Post, the more tailored his or her Personal Post becomes based on those interactions. Alternatively, users can also choose a “starter stream” created by The Post to receive categories of Post content that they believe may fit their interests. For instance, a user can choose from streams such as National Pulse (politics, breaking news and national topics); Washington Life (D.C. area crime, weather, traffic, news & lifestyle); Critical Thinker (opinion and national news); Sports Nut (sports news & analysis) and others. Using Personal Post is optional, and users who do not sign up for Personal Post will not receive personalized headlines.
With today’s launch of the beta version, Personal Post’s news stream features Post sections, blogs and columnists. In the coming months, Personal Post will also feature photo galleries, videos, online discussions and even more individual writers.
The section is powered by Trove, The Washington Post Company’s personalized news aggregator, and will continue to iterate based on user feedback.
Personal Post is one of the latest product launches from The Washington Post, which recently launched @MentionMachine, a news app that tells you how and why 2012 candidates are trending on Twitter. Last fall, The Post Company also created Social Reader, the social app on Facebook that lets you experience news with your friends.
