The Washington Post Launches “Explore D.C.” iPhone App for Visitors and Locals in the Nation’s Capital

The Washington Post today introduces “Explore D.C.,” a new app for iPhone available now on the App Store. Ideal for both tourists and locals, the Explore D.C. app helps visitors tour the nation’s capital cheaply and efficiently while having the most fun and enriching experience possible.

“The Explore D.C. app combines the best of The Washington Post’s coverage of local events and venues, search tools and valuable deals, all in one easy-to-use app. This is one app that everyone will want to use, whether you’re new to D.C. or just want to save money when visiting your favorite sights and restaurants,” said Tim Condon, Director of New Ventures, The Washington Post.

Explore D.C. organizes Washington’s most popular attractions into intuitive categories curated by Washington Post experts. Use the “Short List” to see the essentials during a brief visit, or “Captivate the Kids” for sights suitable for younger travelers. Scroll down to delve into more specific interests, such as the U.S. government, African-American history, the Civil War and more.
Each sight has its own details page with everything you need to make the most of your visit: breezily written background info, advice for parents, a listing of events at the sight, and all the basics — directions, contact info, hours, etc. Plus, every sight entry features a pop-up gallery of funny and fascinating trivia with which to regale your travel companions.

The Deals section is a unique feature of the app, offering a collection of instant discounts at popular Washington restaurants and attractions, such as the Newseum, Madame Tussaud’s and Nationals Park. A family of four visiting the capital could easily save $100 or more during their trip. There is no need to create an account or log in to anything — just tap “Use Deal” and show your phone.

The Explore D.C. app also features:

·         An Events section that breaks out each week’s biggest and best happenings into an easy-to-browse photo deck.

·         Super-smart mapping that provides walking, driving and Metro directions to all the sights.

·         A simple “I Need a …” search tool for when you need coffee, a bank, a pharmacy or many other life necessities in a hurry.

The Explore D.C. app is available for free from the App Store on iPhone.
