Moon bears are seen during a visit by actress Ali MacGraw to the Vietnam Bear Rescue Center in Tam Dao National Park, north of Hanoi. MacGraw is in Vietnam to raise awareness for the protection of the center, a home for 103 rescued moon bears that is under pressure to close for a tourism project, according to Jill Robinson, founder and chief executive officer of Animals Asia, an activist group. Across Asia, more than 14,000 moon bears are being held in captivity on farms and milked for their bile, because it is believed to be effective in the practice of traditional Asian medicine despite the availability of inexpensive and effective herbal and synthetic alternatives, according to Animals Asia.

An American bald eagle prepares to snag a perch in the prime fishing grounds below Conowingo Dam in Darlington, Md. On most days between Thanksgiving and into January, the shallow waters become a prime spot to watch 20 to 50 eagles hunt for prey along the Susquehanna River. Fish that are sucked through the dam turbines are easy pickings on the other side for eagles as well as buzzards, crows and sea gulls. Once the first cold snaps hit in the north, the eagles migrate south for a few months. Wildlife photographers and bird enthusiasts far outnumber fishermen at the dam these days, as they try to capture shots of eagles hunting and dining.
