Can the standard college dorm be saved?

From Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C., I am hearing of a new dorm, called The Village, that breaks away from the standard of rectangular buildings with long halls with doors leading to institutional rooms with just enough room for beds and desks. Wofford spokesman Frank Dobisky describes The Village as “a cluster of attractive apartment buildings that offer amenities such as porches, cooking facilities, a commons area, a bocce ball court and plenty of opportunity for seniors to bond as a class.” You got the last point---the nicer facilities are often just for upperclassmen. But what student housing have you seen that nicely breaks the mold? Is it too expensive for most schools?
