Choosing when to attend merit scholarship weekends

A parent has written me to complain about competitions for merit scholarships, often scheduled for weekends at the end of the admission process. If you don’t attend, you are out of the running. Her son had to make a choice. He chose the one that didn’t require his family to get him there by plane for $600. She wonders if this is just another scam to make parents crazy. Your thoughts?
