The total maximum release from the dam, which includes through its power plant turbines and bypass tunnels, will reach approximately 42,300 cubic feet per second into the Colorado River, according to an Interior Department statement. The release is part of a long-term protocol announced in May by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to meet water and power needs and resolve problems with downstream sediment and non-native fish predation on the Colorado River below the dam.

Four-wheel-drive trucks navigate a sand road that parallels the damaged section of NC 12, just north of the Mirlo Beach area of Rodanthe on Hatteras Island, N.C. Northeast winds pushing water on shore have continued to hamper efforts to reopen N.C. 12. High tides wash over the road, shutting it down. Authorities reopen it when the tide subsides. Capt. Charlie Nieman with the Dare County Sheriff's Office said that cycle is likely to continue through Thanksgiving.
