A large cloud of gas that has spawned dense internal knots which gravitationally collapsed to form stars is seen in this image from the Hubble Space Telescope. Many young stars are visible in this image, along with what is left of the initial gas cloud. Some stars were so massive they have already evolved and exploded in a supernova.

The meteor display, known as the Geminid meteor shower because it appears to radiate from the constellation Gemini, is thought to be the result of debris cast off from an asteroid-like object called 3200 Phaethon.
