Former Post photographer Andrea Bruce to receive Chris Hondros Fund Award

Former Washington Post photographer Andrea Bruce is the first recipient of the Getty Images & Chris Hondros Fund Award. Her work was chosen because it embodies the spirit of Chris Hondros, a fellow photojournalist and friend of Bruce’s who was killed while on assignment in Libya in 2011. Here are some samples of Bruce’s work.

“Roadside Bomb” — The reality of war for soldiers in Iraq is one of roadside bombs, suicide car bombings, heat exhaustion and loss. Although dedication for most continues to be strong, the hardships intensify with the violence. “We're tired of seeing our friends die for a war we don't understand,” said one soldier after a memorial service in Baquba, Iraq. Spec. Hugo Gonzalez prays while being treated in an Army emergency ward in Baquba after suffering shrapnel wounds from a roadside bomb while traveling in an unarmored Humvee.

This Kurdish neighborhood considers female circumcision a rite of passage much like male circumcision. The main difference being that female circumcision removes part of an organ, the clitoris. Male circumcision is the removal of a piece of skin.
