How patient should Dan Snyder be with Mike Shanahan?

I never would’ve guessed that Mike Shanahan — winner of two Super Bowls — would do worse in his first 25 games than did Jim Zorn, the guy foolish enough to run the swinging gate play even after the element of surprise was gone.

But it’s true. Zorn started 11-14 in his first 25 games while Shanahan is 9-16. Losing to the Dolphins — a contender in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes — is especially bad.

Now we’re left to wonder whether Shanahan can still make it as a head coach in the NFL. Barring a miraculous turnaround, Shanahan will complete his fourth straight season as a head coach without a winning record.

Snyder fired Norv Turner midseason, when he had a 7-6 record. Marty Schottenheimer was axed after going 8-8. Zorn was fired after going 12-20 in two seasons. Given Snyder’s track record, we have to wonder if his patience is wearing thin.

If Shanahan does the smart thing and drafts a quarterback in the first round of the NFL draft, he deserves a couple of years to groom the signal-caller. After the turmoil at Redskins Park, some coaching consistency is worth a shot.
