I criticize living at home while doing college in 3 years. Was I wrong?
Washington Post personal finance columnist Michelle Singletary upset me when she argued that parents should not indulge their children's life-style pretensions at college. She suggested urging them to live at home during college and get that BA in three years to avoid debt. I said in response I thought it was good to avoid debt, but one should also consider the long-term life advantages of having the time and opportunity to explore all that colleges have to offer. Rushing it may not be the way to go, even if it saves money.
Here is a link to my column on the subject. There were some good responses, but it was a holiday week for many. I thought this discussion group would like more time to chew on this issue, without the constraints of the three day rule on my Class Struggle column. — Jay Matthews
