Insanely low Ivy League acceptance rate
This is a question for parents, grandparents (like me), counselors, teachers, and even Ivy League admissions officials. When I was an alumni interviewer for one of those schools, I would tell every applicant I saw that getting into such places was like being struck by lightning, or winning the lottery, or some other random event. I would say that the very act of applying was a good sign of their confidence in themselves and their strong record, and the fact that they were destined for a good college, but they should not invest any emotional energy in hopes that they might get in. Was this a bad thing to say? What should we say?
