Trading tips with Jay Mathews on winning at college admissions.

Is it really worth it to get into a very selective college?

We have dealt with this question before, but the discussion group always finds some new people wandering in, and we should not stifle their views. Will getting into a well-known and selective school change a student’s life for the better, or are they likely to get just as much out of a big state school with similar courses and extracurricular activities? The moderator promises not to squash those who disagree with him, something of a problem as he gets older and crankier.
