It’s a deep rut, but is it a problem?
From a reader: “My roommate and I are our late 20s and are good friends. She has been without full-time employment for well over a year now and I am genuinely concerned about why she’s not working. She quit her most recent job right before it was made clear they were going to fire her. Whether it was for cause is unclear to me.
“Anyway, since then, for almost a year now, she has been ‘studying’ for the GRE and GMAT but never actually set a date to take either exam. She has interests in certain graduate programs but has never set the wheels in motion. At first I thought, ‘So long as the rent’s paid, I’m staying out of it.’ But honestly, she is my friend and I am worried this isn’t just low self-esteem but something worse. I have offered to help her look for jobs but my connections haven’t proven successful. I want to express my concern. Should I say something or just stay out of it?”
What would you do — or, if you were the roommate, what would you want a friend to do?
