Radical changes in college admissions: Admission 101 discussants critique the USC report. Part one--Add new places at selective colleges for low-income students

The USC Center for Enrollment Research, Policy and Practice, allied with admissions reformer Lloyd Thacker's Education Conservancy, have released their report (PDF) on a conference they held earlier in the year. It has some of the freshest, and in some cases daring, ideas for improving the process I have seen.

They didn't make recommendations as a group, but suggested actions to discuss. Here is number one for our consideration. They are focused on selective colleges: "Increase the size of the incoming class to make more room for well-qualified students from untraditional and disadvantaged backgrounds. An additional 100 students per institution would make a material difference."

This idea has potential. It is more serious and rational than my suggestion that Yale franchize itself so it can have more campuses in places with better ambiance, like Santa Fe, NM, Ocean City, MD and Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA.  But will it work, and what are the unintended consequences? Your thoughts, please. I will be offering up four more suggestions from the conference for your consideration in the coming days.
