Saving your future career by hiding in universities if the economy is bad
Anthony P. Carnevale, director of the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workplace, argued in the Post's Outlook section [Want a Job? Stay in college as long as you can] on Sept 18 that students in higher ed should stay there until hiring picks up in their chosen field. "Entering the formal job market during a recession and settling for low-skill, low-pay work can permanently derail career prospects," he said.
He appears to have data to back him up, but does it make that much sense? The intricacies of the job market are so complex, I would prefer to look anyway, and see if there was something at the bottom that had a career path to management, as some teaching and big company delivery jobs do. Or is hunkering down the smarter move?
