Should we encourage colleges to cut tuition and stop discounting?
The University of the South, usually known as Sewanee, has announced something rare, a cut in tuition, so the full bill including room and board will drop next year from $46,112 to $41,518. The vice chancellor, John McCardell, says the school is worried that colleges are pricing themselves beyond the reach of families. Some people are also unhappy with pricing policies that inflate the cost so that the college can offer deep discounts, or what they call merit scholarships, to kids they really want, or at least to look good in comparison to competitors. Can we get more colleges to lower the sticker price? Will that help families and make the college experience better and more accessible? Or do they need the money to keep quality up?
