Taking the SAT and ACT and starting the college search too early
Veteran guidance counselor and consultant Bruce Vinik shared with me his concern about increasing numbers of first semester juniors taking the SAT or ACT--tests designed, he noted, for “second semester juniors and first semester seniors.” He said except for a few stars, “it’s hard for most students to score as well as they should.” This means they have to take the test again, and maybe again. It wears them down. He has the same complaint about parents dragging their kids to campus visits early in the junior year. It is hard for them to engage in the process then, and taints the rest of their time in high school.
Are you also seeing this? What can be done about it? Should we have colleges ban visits by juniors? No, that will never work. Anybody got any good ideas?
