Thanks for paying the rent?
From a reader: “It has recently occurred to me that there aren’t the same sort of opportunities to thank breadwinners as there are to thank homemakers. That is, when someone cooks for you, a natural response is to thank them, but then it’s not really natural for the person who cooked the meal to turn around and say, “Thanks for earning the money to pay for the food I cooked!” Looking back at my own childhood, I recall thanking my mother for dinner, doing my laundry, etc., but don’t recall thanking my father for the work he did that paid for the food we ate, clothes we wore and the roof over our head. Day-to-day my mom got lots of thank-yous and my dad none. I’m not really sure what my question is ... I guess, how do breadwinners get their fair share of appreciation? On what occasions could/should they be thanked?”
Thoughts?
