The college prep our high schools are not providing
I did my Friday online column last week about a new report on gains caused by something called social and emotional learning, or SEL. It was optimistic that lessons that focus on behavior and attitude could improve achievement, but i was more interested in the effect it might have on students’ success in college and in the workplace. I mention this occasionally, our high schools’ failure to teach punctuality, eye-contact, confident and audible speaking, teamwork, sharing ideas and other personal traits that will serve them as well, of not better, after graduation as being able to handle a quadratic equation. My question for our group: If everyone says high schools should be teaching this, why aren’t they? Do the ed schools not train for it? Do educators think this is families’ job, not theirs? Is it because there is no NCLB test covering it? This is important college prep, but I wonder why we ignore it in favor of getting everyone ready for the SAT.
