- Trading tips with Jay Mathews on winning at college admissions.
When college admission rates are so low, should you send in applications just for fun?
My tongue is only slightly in my cheek here. When the chances of getting in fall that low, it seems to me like approaching the speed of light. All the laws of the universe fall away, and we are left to wonder what parts of the standard admission strategy work for such schools. Should college counselors tell candidates that it is a crap shoot, and that they should not have any expectations? Should they reveal the sad truth that in most cases, in competitive high schools, only the legacy kids will get in? Should we petition Harvard, Yale and Princeton to franchize themselves, in more pleasant climes like San Diego or Santa Fe or Biloxi? What are your thoughts and suggestions? I may do a column if it can provide some needed laughs about the very strange way the admissions systems for such schools have evolved.
