A zookeeper taps on an adult African white rhinoceros in its enclosure at the Singapore Zoo. The zoo has eight of these majestic creatures in its collection. So far 13 white rhinos have been born here, the most in a single zoo in Southeast Asia, but some have been sent to Indonesia, Australia, Thailand and South Korea as part of the zoo’s ex-situ conservation efforts. White rhinos are listed as “Near Threatened” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species.

"Willie doesn't have eyes, but he's a sweetie,” Tammy Basenese said, holding the Dachshund she just adopted at Coastal Animal Rescue's Family and Fur Festival in Surfside Beach, Fla. "His tail is a little messed up too. I don't want to know what happened to him. He may have been born this way for all I know. All I know is he's mine now and I love him." Basenese is the owner of Mod Dog, a pet goods store, and she helped sponsor the event, but had no plans of actually adopting a dog or cat. Once she met Willie, however, she fell in love and could not walk away without him. “Look at him. He's beautiful,” she said.
