Why buy a cow when you can milk your in-laws for free?

From a reader: “For the three years of their marriage, our son-in-law has not held even a part-time job. He works a few hours a week walking dogs and he plays in a band, mostly for fun, not pay. Our daughter has an illness that prevents her from working right now. She was self-employed and she receives no assistance. She does not have health insurance so we are doing what we can to help her with medical bills.

“Our daughter is very proud and keeps her worries to herself.

“My husband wants to confront our son-in-law and tell him to basically man up and get a job. How appropriate is it to meddle in a married child’s life? I fear our daughter has lost her voice in this matter; she constantly defers to her husband, treats him very respectfully and kindly. He does the same to her. I have heard him say things like, ‘The universe will provide.’ I guess we are that universe. It makes me angry that he accepts our help without any shame. What should we do?”

Abridged version: They’re propping up what may be an emotionally unhealthy situation because of their daughter’s fragile physical health.

What would you do in this case?
