Will a great high school lead to a great college?
My annual rankings of America’s most challenging high schools come out this Sunday in washingtonpost.com. We have moved them from Newsweek, where they were for 12 years, because the Post sold Newsweek last summer. Here is a question I will explore in my Monday column the day after the list appears. I could use your thoughts.
Are you more likely to get into a good college, the one at the top of your list, if you get into a very competitive and challenging high school like the ones at the top of my list? I say no. That competition means that college will only take a few kids from your school and you are less likely to stand out than if you were at a more ordinary high school. The saving grace, I think, is that you will be able to find a college just as good for you as any of the Ivies, and be more ready for it having attended a challenging high school. Am I wrong?
