Singles File: Fiona Apple, Carnage, William Basinski, DMV rappers, Alt-J

By Allison Stewart,

Singles File A weekly playlist for the listener with a one-track mind Fiona Apple: “Dull Tool” Apple’s contribution to the soundtrack to Judd Apatow’s upcoming “This Is 40” could be (and is, maybe?) an “Idler Wheel” outtake: It’s weirdly syncopated, cheerily off-putting, and equal parts awkward and great. Carnage featuring Katie Got Bandz: “Kat!e” The L.A.-by-way-of-Frederick producer pays raucous tribute to the Chicago drill mistress. William Basinski: “Dlp 1.1 Live at The 54th Venice Biennale, October 18, 2008” The ambient composer’s landmark post-Sept. 11 work “The Disintegration Loops,” made using crumbling, reclaimed tape snippets, was recently reissued in a five-disc box set with additional material like this live track, arranged by Antony and the Johnsons’ Maxim Moston. Various Artists: “DMV: The Dream Team, Vol. 1” Fat Trel, Muggsy Malone and a lot of fine MCs you’ve never heard of populate this DMV state-of-the-union mixtape, collated by local rapper-producer General Kamau. Alt-J: “Slow Dre” (Minogue/Dre mashup) Remember when Dr. Dre used to make songs, not overpriced headphones? Alt-J does: The reigning Mercury Prize champs make a woozy cocktail out of Kylie Minogue’s “Slow” and Dre’s “Still D.R.E.” — Allison Stewart
