HIGHLIGHTS

SERIES PREMIERE: Competition series “Spell-Mageddon” (ABC Family at 9 p.m.) throws a twist at any contestant who thinks this is a regular spelling contest, as spellers must take on crazy distractions while trying to spell words correctly.

Peter and Jared try to wrangle a guy who won’t stop heckling a baseball prospect on “Franklin & Bash” (TNT at 9), while Rachel reluctantly helps out her family with a legal matter.

The top eight competitors on “MasterChef” (Fox at 9) must create something delicious for the judges using very few ingredients. To make it even more difficult, the challenge takes place in a remote location.

SERIES PREMIERE: Former “Fear Factor” host Joe Rogan is apparently a paranormal mystery buff — and has a podcast devoted to the subject — so now he gets his own show, “Joe Rogan Questions Everything” (Syfy at 10). In the opener, Rogan tries to make sense of mysterious theories, starting with the existence of Bigfoot.

New special and possible back-door pilot “Dance Kids ATL” (TLC at 10) features a dance studio in Georgia, as the coach and choreographer work with young kids to learn hip-hop moves.

RETURNING SHOW: Local chef Bryan Voltaggio — Frederick’s Volt, Chevy Chase’s Range, etc. — makes franchise history for “Top Chef Masters” (Bravo at 10), as he becomes the first “Top Chef” contestant to return to the “Masters” edition of the show. In the Season 5 opener, 13 contestants must create a meal for a professional skydiving team; and then, if they feel like it, possibly leap out of a plane themselves.

Dani tries to help a writer on “Necessary Roughness” (USA at 10), while a sex tape threatens to be a scandal that could ruin T.K.’s football career.

Haskell’s in a bind on “The Exes” (TV Land at 10:30) when his former wife gets in an accident and has amnesia. She temporarily moves in with him, thinking they’re still married.

Actor Jason Sudeikis is on “Late Show With David Letterman” (CBS at 11:35), along with musical guests Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros.

“The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” (NBC at 11:35) hosts actor Ashton Kutcher, actress Jayma Mays and a performance by Hiatus Kaiyote.
