Shawn, 46, right, is a Lutheran pastor. Mo, 47, is a lobbyist. They live in D.C.
The Main Event: They wed Aug. 18 in a Lutheran church on Capitol Hill. Their processional was the hymn “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee,” sung first by their guests and then by a choir, gospel-style.
How They Met: While in Minneapolis for a conference for LGBTQ Lutherans. “Our eyes first met during opening worship,” Mo says.
First Kiss: After the conference. “I didn’t know whether we’d meet again,” Mo says. “I just had to do it.”
First Date: Mo was living in D.C.; Shawn was living along the Canadian border in Minnesota. “Our first date involved getting pulled over by U.S. Border Patrol for an interrogation,” Shawn says.
How They Proposed: They proposed to each other in front of Trevi Fountain in Rome. A year later, Shawn presented Mo with a claddagh ring and a “proper” proposal.
Most Stupid Fight: Over Mo’s D.C. driving. “Hello?!” Mo says. “In D.C., we do what we have to do.” Shawn: “In Minnesota, horns are only used to scare animals off the road — not to communicate with other drivers.”
Pet Names: Shawn is “Super Awesome,” while Mo is “Captain Awesome.”
