Best of Comedy

There wasn’t one medium that defined “comedy” in 2012, so my year-end roundup is a hodgepodge of some of the best ways I consumed humor.

Best Podcast: Scott Aukerman’s “Comedy Bang! Bang!,” a loose, anything-goes gabfest where celebrities and comics aren’t afraid to get silly.

Best TV Show Not Named “Louie:” “Parks and Recreation,” which provided a genuine shock — and deep emotional payoff — when Ben (Adam Scott) proposed to Leslie (Amy Poehler), above.

Best Album: Tig Notaro’s “Live,” recorded after she was diagnosed with cancer, reminded us that laughter really can be the best medicine.

Best Film Judd Apatow Wasn’t Involved With: No movie has captured the essence of stand-up quite like Mike Birbiglia’s “Sleepwalk With Me.”

Best Way to Spend $5: Rob Delaney’s “Live at the Bowery Ballroom” special, which proved that Twitter can help you build a career.

Best Tweeter: @meganamram, whose compact, absurd jokes always made me laugh. Example: “‘Malcolm In The Middle’” is a good TV show but a GREAT recipe for a Human Centipede.”

Best News of 2012 That Won’t Pay Off Until 2013: New “Arrested Development” on Netflix!
