VH1’s “Best Week Ever” used to be a secretly good clip show about bad reality TV and celebrity culture. Each week, an impressive roster of comedians would riff on “The Bachelor,” “American Idol” and Paris Hilton. “Best Week” capitalized on our short attention spans and penchant for instant nostalgia until it was canceled in 2010.
I was a big fan of “Best Week,” which employed some of my favorite comics, so I was excited to learn VH1 would be reviving the series with a new cast (featuring relative unknowns, such as Jared Logan, Michael Che and Megan Neuringer).
Unfortunately, when I tuned in to Friday’s premiere, it felt like VH1 had exhumed “Best Week Ever’s” corpse and tried to reanimate it.
The new panel’s jokes fell flat, the writing relied on bad wordplay and the clips barely registered a laugh.
But the thing that bugged me most was something the show ignored. Last Wednesday, Deadspin.com revealed that Notre Dame linebacker Manti T’eo’s girlfriend never existed. You’d think it would be the first thing a week-in-review show would discuss.
Instead, “Best Week Ever” opened with clips from “The Bachelor.” Same as it ever was — but worse.
