It can be rewarding to train for a long-distance race, such as Sunday’s Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run or the 2013 Marine Corps Marathon (which sold out in a record 2 hours 27 minutes last week). But you can get to the finish line of one of these weekend 5Ks much faster.
Crystal Run 5K Fridays
The healthiest happy hour returns to Crystal City this month. At 6:30 p.m. every Friday in April, it’s time to gather at 2121 Crystal Drive and go on a brisk tour of the neighborhood. Also scope out some new shoes with the Pacers Shoe Lab, which lets you swap what’s on your feet for a pair from Mizuno, Saucony or Newton for the duration of the race. After the run, participants can shower at Sport & Health or take a free yoga-for-athletes class at 7:30 p.m. at Mind Your Body Oasis. It’s $20 for one race, or $60 for the series of four (just hold on to your bib and timing tag). For more details, visit Runpacers.com/race/crystal-run-5k-Fridays.
D.C. Endurance Challenge Fun Run
Local ultramarathon star Michael Wardian invites you to a warm-up for The North Face’s annual nine-race extravaganza. While the longest distance at the big event in Sterling, Va.’s Algonkian Regional Park (Thenorthface.com/en_US/endurance-challenge/washington-dc) will be 50 miles, no one is expected to go more than 3.1 miles on this Saturday’s jog. It starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Georgetown store (3333 M St. NW). Stick around for post-run snacks and a poster signing with Wardian.
Heroes vs. Villains Run For Justice 5K
Ever tried running with a cape? This $35 fundraiser for the Fairfax Law Foundation invites participants to come dressed as their favorite comic-book characters. There won’t be any actual fighting at 9 a.m. Sunday in Fairfax Corner. But you can triumph even if you can’t go faster than a speeding bullet — there are also several prizes for best costumes. Get more details at Fairfaxlawfoundation.org.
