Of all the peculiar activities encouraged at Thomas Foolery — the zany new bar and grilled cheese restaurant (2029 P St. NW) where doing the Running Man dressed as Carlton from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” gets you 10 percent off your order — the most intriguing to me was the “angry hour” special.
Daily from 5 to 7 p.m., guests who use a nasty tone when ordering from the drinks menu (which was selected by a group of locals that includes a “pi-digit champion” and a former astronaut) receive $1 off their drink. After a rough day last week, I stopped by to test it out.
“Alright,” I said to the bartender in what I thought was a stern voice. “Get me a Bell’s Two Hearted.” It didn’t register with him that I was trying to be rude, and he charged me full price. I called the bar’s owner, Steve Davis, to see what I did wrong.
“The point is to make a completely overdramatic, overzealous order,” says Davis, who also owns Mr. Yogato. “One guy threw a deck of cards in anger when he ordered. I gave him a free drink.”
Learn from my mistake. And the next time you need to let off some steam, give this place a chance, damn it! David Webber (Express)
