The Pretenders

Friday brings “One Direction: This Is Us,” starring Zayn and Louis and Niall and Harry and Liam. We would never suggest that One Direction is a fake band, bound by a love of hair products rather than music. But even if 1D was fake, it wouldn’t be the first fictional band in a movie.

The Commitments
The band from the 1991 film of the same name was made up a bunch of Irish people who figured they could sing black soul music. The weird thing is, it really worked.

Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem
Rock stars have a reputation for trouble, but few have to be chained to their instruments, as drummer Animal is in 1979’s “The Muppet Movie.” That’s taking heavy metal to a new level.

Stillwater
A boy-wonder journalist follows this on-the-verge-of-fame band in 2000’s “Almost Famous” and discovers that rocking out also involves long bus rides, near-constant infighting and sleeping with Kate Hudson. So it’s all worth it, presumably.

Spinal Tap
As an homage to the subject of the 1984 mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap,” let’s take your iPod and turn it up to 11. You weren’t using your eardrums anyway.

The Wonders
Originally named the Oneders (mispronounced “oh-needers” by multiple announcers), the group from 1996’s “That Thing You Do” performed a song so catchy you’re singing it right now. Have a great day!
