Scott Aukerman’s “Comedy Bang! Bang!” is a talk show, but not really. Modeled after the podcast of the same name, the TV series (Fridays, 10 p.m., IFC) has all the aspects of a late-night gabfest: couches, house band Reggie Watts and celebrity guests. But it also has comedians like Paul F. Tompkins playing weirdo characters and out-there sketches that have little in common with “The Tonight Show.” For the second year in a row, Aukerman will be in D.C. on Tuesday for live shows featuring sketch group The Birthday Boys and podcast tapings.
Are people starting to recognize you?
I actually had a weird experience with someone recognizing me at a party recently. … All of a sudden someone is waving me over frantically and it’s Jim Carrey. He tells me how much he loves the show and had a bunch of questions.
Are you going to get him on the show?
I’d like to. You never know what Jim Carrey’s up to. He’s a mysterious man.
What’s the format for this tour?
I’m going to come out and do some bits that I’ve been working on and then we’re going to do a podcast. Sometimes it will just be [Tompkins] and I, sometimes there will be special guests. I’ve been experimenting with new things to do and ways to incorporate the crowd.
The TV show returns for the second half of Season 2 Friday. What can we expect?
[There’s] the Pee-wee Herman Halloween episode, which was such a thrill to make. … He does all new Pee-wee bits. … The last episode is our Christmas episode with my favorite guest, Santa Claus.
Who is playing Santa?
It’s the real Santa Claus. It’s not Mommy or Daddy, if that’s what you’re asking.
