Vegetarian Talk

When people learn that Zachary Koval won the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ “Sexiest Vegetarian” contest in 2012, they stare. Then they want him to share — How does he get enough protein? What does he eat after a workout?

So the New York-based personal trainer is visiting Vida Fitness on Thursday to explain how he maintains both his body and his conscience. Part of the answer: beans. Make them sexier, he says, by cooking them with kombu seaweed, which reduces flatulence. Attendees will also score samples of protein powder. Vida Fitness (RSVP to LindsayR@Peta.org with full name for exact location); Thu., 7:30 p.m., free.

Boat Demo Day

Before you buy a car, you take a test drive. Hudson Trail Outfitters offers the same service for its kayaks and stand up paddle boards at this event Saturday. And everyone can cool off after paddling with free shaved ice (and other snacks). Seneca Creek State Park, Gaithersburg, Md.; Sat., 10 a.m.-3 p.m., free, but there’s a park fee ($3 for state residents, $5 for out-of-state); hudsontrail.com.
