Paredes grew up in San Bernardino, Calif., and graduated in 1992 Phi Beta Kappa, along with honors in general scholarship and economics, with a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of California at Berkeley. He graduated from Yale Law School as a Coker fellow, under Professor Ian Ayres, in 1996.
Described by "some observers as skeptical about regulation," Paredes rejected calls by lawmakers to weigh in on whether the SEC should reopen the issue of shareholders' say in companies' election of directors. During his Senate confirmation hearing in June 2008, Paredes promised to keep an open mind and said the issue "needs to be finally resolved."
As a top priority, Paredes also cited the need to fix credit rating agencies and said that additional attention needed to be paid to potential conflicts of interest within such firms. He added that the disclosure of previous performances of credit rating agencies and the accuracy of their ratings was "worth giving serious consideration."
Paredes serves on the SEC with Commissioners Christopher Cox, Kathleen Casey, Elisse Walter and Luis Aguilar.
Paredes, while politically active and vocal, has not given much money to political campaigns.
