After beating first-term incumbent Adrian Fenty (D) in the Democratic primary, Gray cruised to an easy general election victory to become Washington, D.C., mayor in the heavily Democratic nation's capital.
Though Fenty delivered significant results to the city during his four years on the job, voters appeared to reject his combative style in favor of Gray's more conciliatory approach. He won the Democratic primary, 53 to 46 percent.
