Stevan E. Pearce (R-N.M.)

U.S. Representative (since January 2011)

(People for Pearce Facebook Page)

Why He Matters

After losing the 2008 New Mexico Senate race to Democrat Tom Udall, Pearce hinted voters hadn't seen the last of him. Two years later, he returned to the campaign trail to reclaim his old House seat on the U.S.-Mexican border.

Though Pearce may have been too conservative to win the statewide Senate seat, he proved to be perfect ideological mix to win back the 2nd district House seat he occupied from 2003 to 2009. Challenging freshman Rep. Harry Teague, a conservative Democrat, national issues such as taxes, jobs and climate change measures loomed large in Pearce's 2010 campaign.

The Issues

Since taking his first House seat in 2003, Pearce has staked out anti-regulation and fiscally conservative positions. During the 110th Congress (2007-2009), Pearce voted with the majority of his party 94 percent of the time.

Pearce said he is open to reforming Social Security to allow individuals to shift part of their accounts to private investments, so long as the funds were still under government supervision. In 2005, Pearce said he supported a limited version of reform proposed by President George W. Bush that would have allowed the partial diversion of the Social Security tax to private accounts.
