Aaron Schock (R-Ill.)

U.S. Representative

(Schock Facebook Profile)

Why He Matters

The first House Member born during the 1980s, Schock was voted 2009's "hottest congressional freshman" by readers of The Huffington Post and has been chased by the likes of gossip web site TMZ. But more importantly, House GOP leaders like Eric Cantor (R-Va.) have called Shock one of the party's "young guns." "In only a few short months in Washington, he has already established himself as a leader," Cantor has said.

Schock grew up as a precocious teenager, opening businesses and winning election to the Peoria school board. Now part of the Republican Study Committee, Schock has pushed a conservative agenda. He was also prominently and unsuccessfully courted by President Obama ahead of the February 2009 vote on the $787-billion economic stimulus bill.

The Issues

Through May 2010, Schock voted with House Republicans 92.1 percent of the time.

Unlike his predecessor, LaHood, Schock opposed an Obama administration plan to move Guantanamo Bay detainees to the Thomson Correctional Center, 150 miles away from Chicago. In a December 2009 TV appearance, Schock also said said waterboarding and other forms of torture should not be ruled out to extract information from terrorists.

The Network

Schock pinpointed Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill.) early as both a friend in Congress and a potential mentor, saying in December 2007 the relationship would "bode well ... in terms of my ability to be effective."

Shimkus told reporters at the time that Schock has "been able to reach voters that have historically not been really excited about the Republican Party or our message. ... We need new blood and freshness and Aaron brings that."
