U.S. Senator (since January 2009)

Why He Matters

The self-described "proud progressive" is one of a handful of freshman Senate Democrats in Washington. He ousted incumbent Gordon Smith (R-Ore.) in November 2008.

Merkley has been Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives since January 2007, after he helped Oregon Democrats regain control of the state's House of Representatives for the first time in 16 years.

Path to Power

Merkley was born in Myrtle Creek, Ore. His family followed his father to Roseburg, Ore., and then to Portland, Ore., for work in the timber industry.

"My father worked in a timber mill, as a logger, as a carpenter and as a union mechanic," Merkley says. "And every day when he'd come home from work, he'd watch the evening news and read the paper and have a running dialogue about what was happening in our country and what we needed to do to make government responsive to the needs of working families."

The Issues

Merkley cites his biggest accomplishment as reaching to Republicans when he was Speaker of the Oregon House and Democrats ruled by a slim, one-vote majority. Despite vast skepticism about the possibilities of getting anything done, Merkley describes the 2003 session as the "most productive and progressive in a generation." He says the House passed "major legislation" on topics from renewable energy, ending payday and title loan-sharking and investing in health care and education while balancing the state budget.

The Economy

Merkley says his priority for the 111th Congress is getting the economy back on track, including creating living-wage jobs and investing in green energy. "We also need to provide tax relief for working families," he said in a Washington Post questionnaire.
