The son of schoolteachers, Boccieri was born in 1969 in Youngstown, Ohio.
A graduate of St. Bonaventure University, which he attended on a baseball scholarship, Boccieri tried out for several Major League Baseball teams, spending 1992 in the independent Frontier League.
Through March 2010, Boccieri had voted with his party 93.7 percent of the time in the 111th Congress.
Boccieri is a close friend of Gov. Ted Strickland (D-Ohio). Boccieri considered running for Strickland's House seat in 2006 when the incumbent was running for governor. When Boccieri held his campaign kickoff in 2007, Strickland spoke saying, "I love John Boccieri as a brother. I have urged him for quite some time to seek the congressional office."
Boccieri has worked with Reps. Frank Kratovil (D-Md.) and Christopher Lee (R-N.Y.) to introduce a bill making permanent tax credits for corporate research.
