Tom Sietsema reviews Evening Star in his Sunday dining column in The Washington Post Magazine this week, and he finds there’s a little something for everyone on the...

Today's Editors' Picks

  • Winter on the Plantation - Miscellaneous Event
Shoveling the walk has nothing on the winter chores that people of the 18th and 19th centuries had to do. Families can find out all that went into running a Maryland household in the winter time through demonstrations, hands-on activities and games.
    Montpelier Mansion | Laurel, MD
  • Jeff Mangum - Music Event

  • Think Fast JAK, the Dustys, Nikki and the Weeps - Music Event
There are plenty of bands that cater to the "Itsy Bitsy Spider" audience. But how about the slightly older crowd? For kids and tweens who are too old for juice boxes but too young to stay out past bedtime, Merrifield Records presents an afternoon show for all ages with family-friendly music ranging from mellow indie to bouncy rock. Plus, the up-and-coming bands are local so kids can brag that they knew them before they got big.

  • Polar Bear Plunge - Miscellaneous Event
Need a January jolt to shake off those mid-winter doldrums? Maryland's Polar Bear Plunge annually attracts thousands of warm-blooded thrill-seekers to shed their parkas and ski pants and sprint into the Chesapeake Bay's chilly (to put it mildly) waters. If you don't see the upside to that, there's no point in reading any further. But if that sounds like a challenge you're up for, plan to raise at least $50 for Special Olympics Maryland and then start training for the 8 a.m. plunge. How? We'd start by getting used to more than a few seconds of a cold shower and going from there.
Sandy Point State Park | Annapolis, MD
  • Mischief Managed - Music Event
If the name of this show doesn't conjure up images of magic wands and broom sticks then you are probably a muggle. For those of you who instantly understood the "Harry Potter" reference, this show should be marked on your calendar. The IBIS Chamber Music Society highlights how music makes a story richer with a performance of music from "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" and an arrangement of Ravel's Mother Goose Suite. The latter will be narrated with images projected on the ceiling.
