Cicada desserts: More than meets the (red, beady) eye Image

To anyone looking to sample a real cicada -- or "flying shrimp" as one Capital Weather Gang reader calls them -- don't look to Del Ray's Dairy Godmother. The shop is offering a specialty flavor May 31 through June 1 called cicada crunch, but it's not what you think.

Today's Editors' Picks

  • Todd Terry - Bar/Club Event
Todd Terry is an absolute legend of house music. The man who made Everything But the Girl's "Missing" into an inescapable international hit. The man who helped turn the Jungle Brothers' "I'll House You" into a dancefloor classic. The man whose DJ abilities earned him the nickname "Todd the God" in his hometown of New York. He's at U Street Music Hall's Red Fridays. Don't miss it - pun intended.
U Street Music Hall | Washington, DC
  • Boysetsfire, No Trigger, Pentimento, Light Years, Makers - Music Event
Emo pioneers/political hardcore act Boysetsfire is back together, like many of its peers from the '90s. But rather just play "The Day the Sun Went Out" in its entirety, or songs from that split EP with Snapcase, the Delaware band is recording new music, with an album on the way next month. Hear new stuff from "While a Nation Sleeps" - and, we're sure, classics from the "In Chrysalis" era - when the band's tour kicks off at the Rock and Roll Hotel.
The Rock and Roll Hotel | Washington, DC
  • Purple Stank: A DJ Dredd Dance Party - Bar/Club Event
You know it's a long weekend when DJ Dredd is headlining the main stage of the Black Cat. This one's called "Purple Stank," which is your clue that he's reviving the "Prince vs Outkast" concept. Find out what happens when two funky forces collide, back-to-back, all night long.

  • Of Montreal - Music Event
Flying Dog's monthly Summer Sessions might just be your dream party: A chance to spend a weekend evening sitting in a field, drinking beer and listen to rock music. Except in this case, the music is by rock stars, such as Of Montreal, Deer Tick or the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and the field is located next to the Flying Dog Brewery, which means it's pretty dang fresh. The series kicks off with Of Montreal's fusion of weird indie-electro-funk, and given the band's reputation for over-the-top live theatrics, there's a chance we could be in for a treat. Tickets are $20, though that doesn't include beer, which will be sold a la carte.
Flying Dog Brewery | Frederick, MD
  • Delaplane Strawberry Festival - Miscellaneous Event
It's no coincidence that strawberry festivals fill the latter part of May. That's precisely when you'll finally find the sweet, seedy berries on the vine at local farms, if only for a brief, brilliant month. At Sky Meadows State Park, the strawberry season kicks off with the 20th Delaplane festival, featuring fruit, sweet sundaes, strawberry shortcake and family activities including an antique car show and games.

  • Distrikt of Columbia: A Boat Party on the Potomac - Bar/Club Event
A floating nightclub: That’s the general idea behind California electronic music collective Distrikt's first cruise on the Potomac. The three-hour tour features a half-dozen DJs spinning house and funky tunes, including local heroes All Good Funk Alliance, an open bar and circus-style performances. Given Distrikt's reputation for throwing packed day parties at Burning Man, it's safe to say it's going to be pretty intense. And good. (They're taking over the multi-level Cherry Blossom boat, which looks like a paddle-wheeler, so multiple DJs can play at the same time.) The boat leaves the Alexandria City Marina promptly at 7 p.m., and returns at 10, followed by an after-party at U Street Music Hall. You have to get tickets in advance, so don't slack.
Alexandria City Marina | Alexandria, VA

Since 2007, Imperial China has been one of D.C.'s most exciting and aggressive live bands.
