The streets of Shirlington turn into a beery block party during this 12-year-old Oktoberfest celebration, sponsored by Capitol City Brewing Co. More than 30 breweries set up tents to pour four-ounce samples while oompah music fills the air and restaurants dish out food. (The best eats, though, are the wursts and pretzels served by local German organizations.) Virginia law put an end to the day's "all the beer you can taste" format, so imbibers pay $25 for a tasting glass and 10 drink tickets; additional tickets cost $1 each. Designated drivers and kids get in free.
To make the most of the day, skip the popular breweries you've heard of and try the pours from D.C. area brewpubs and regional microbreweries, such as Stoudt's and Victory.
