Downtown Countdown

Editorial Review

Hosted by DC101's Elliot in the Morning, the Downtown Countdown is one of Washington's largest New Year's Eve parties. This year, the black tie-optional party at the Grand Hyatt features three ballrooms of live music and dancing.

Entertainment comes from '90s hitmakers Third Eye Blind (remember "Semi-Charmed Life" and "How's It Going to Be"?) and local cover band Gonzo's Nose, plus dancing to Flounder's Mash-Ups and Top-40 DJs, karaoke in the Grand Slam Sports Bar, a stand-up comedy room and a sports bar with TVs to watch the college bowl games.

The requisite open bar is available from 8:30 to 1:30, and a heavy hors d'oeuvres buffet is offered from 9:30 to 11:30.

Tickets start at $109 and increase in price as the event gets closer.

VIP tickets, which cost between $175 and $275, allow access to additional bar areas, private seating, a lounge with a view of the dance floor and an upscale dinner menu, plus an extended menu and an extra half-hour of open bar.

Discounted hotel rooms are available.
