The formal Bombay Club is definitely not a spot for a raucous happy hour, but its new after-work deals should be on every downtown worker's radar.
Mixed drinks are $6, whether you want a Beefeater and tonic or a house cocktail like the Mirchini, a sweet-and-spicy mix of chili-infused vodka, mango liqueur and fresh mango juice. Glasses of house wine - red, white and sparkling - are the same price, and Kingfisher beers are $5.
But the real reason to make your way to the Bombay Club's "Khushi Hour" is to try the large selection of Indian appetizers ($6 each): fiery calamari laced with hot peppers, garlic and vinegar; crispy puri with mango, and samosas packed with butternut squash and peas. Fill up on those, and you might feel like blowing off dinner.
About that refined atmosphere: The bar is so quiet - like, museum quiet - that whispering seems required.
Monday through Friday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The Bombay Club, 815 Connecticut Ave. NW. 202-659-3727. www.bombayclubdc.com.
