"Phoenix Rising" is a fitting motto for Old Stein's menu and staff T-shirts. Completely gutted by a fire last December, the restaurant and bar raced to reopen for Oktoberfest, finally finishing in mid-September. It's hard to pick one highlight: the vast, terraced backyard beer garden, where musicians perform Thursday through Sunday; the kitchen, which sends out plump, filling weisswurst, tangy beef sauerbraten in a rich sauce and succulent jagerschnitzel in a mushroom and herb sauce; or the 10 draft beers, a mix of German and Belgian favorites, with one constantly rotating tap. Bring friends: The high-backed booths in the rustic bar and dining room seem to have been designed with groups in mind.
