The Derby at the Derby

Beer/spirits tasting
Please note: This event has already occurred.
When your bar has "Derby" in the name, it's pretty much a given that you're hosting a Kentucky Derby party. The Red Derby has no connection to horse racing 364 days of the year, but the Columbia Heights dive does it up on Derby Day, starting with what owner Sasha Carter calls "The Big Hat Bunch." Come in dressed for brunch wearing an oversized chapeau, "as if you're going to the Derby," she says, "and if it's outlandish and awesome, we'll buy you a drink or something." (Even without a hat, penny pinchers would agree that the hipster-friendly brunch menu includes great deals: $2 mimosas and bloody marys from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.)

Outside of brunch, there are $5 mint juleps and free derby pie (while it lasts), followed by a viewing of the Kentucky Derby on the bar's large projection screen.

I should note this is running in concert with the Cinco de Derby party, where the featured drink is a $4 Mexican Combo (a shot of tequila and a can of Tecate).
