The newest piece in H Street's live-music puzzle and the sister venue to the Rock & Roll Hotel and DC9, the Red Palace combined the closet-size rock club the Red & the Black with its next-door neighbor, the burlesque-themed Palace of Wonders. There are still some sideshow-themed evenings, but you'll mostly see up-and-coming indie rock bands. Two downstairs bars offer plenty of places spots to grab a drink.

Our Review

What we love: The shape of the room. Almost every venue on this list is vertical — the distance between the stage and the back of the room is longer than the distance between the walls. Red Palace’s horizontal layout means that even at the back of the room, you’re not far from the stage. It can’t help but be intimate.

What we don’t: The placement of the bar. Here’s where that horizontal layout can be a problem. The bar creates a logjam at the entrance, and if you get stuck at its far end, you can’t see the stage.
