Classic tavern fare and an attractive interior make this a nice addition to the Eastern Market neighborhood.
1. We had a hard time finding anything on the menu we truly wanted to order. 2. Like his other restaurants the food was much less appealing than the setting. 3. Like his other restaurants, the wine list is quite overpriced and contains many mediocre wines--thus inflated prices are charged for some very forgettable wines. 4. Like Xavier's other restaurants, the attractive decor includes much appealing wood. Like all of his other restaurants, just a little more thought and effort in design could have turned what is very attractive into a stunning, gorgeous masterpiece. 5. Go and try Boxcar for yourself. At the least, go for a drink and admire the atmosphere. Try an appetizer while doing so. It might be to your liking.
I'm okay with the food and drinks but the music is usually turned up so loud conversation is impossible unless you enjoy yelling. They did turn it down for us one night (we were there early) and it was much better. I know it's a pub, but you should have to damage your hearing to go there.
