On a warm, sunny day, there are few better places for outdoor happy hour than at DC Reynolds’s giant back patio, lined with 13 picnic tables.
The Georgia Avenue bar also has attention-grabbing specials: All drinks are two-for-one between 5 and 9 p.m., one of the best deals in town. Order a gin and tonic or a pint of one of the numerous local beers on draft -- such as Lost Rhino, Port City or Chocolate City -- and you’re looking at a pair of drinks for around $5. Want some higher-end vodka or a fancy rum drink? The bartender will cut you a two-for-one deal as well.
At happy hour, sometimes servers give you a coupon to redeem for the second (free) drink, and sometimes they don’t. One night, my server on the packed patio started to charge our group for two beers instead of one but yielded after we pointed out that the second round was the free one.
One block from the Petworth Metro station, this is a neighborhood bar, and at busy times, you’ll probably be asked to share your six-person picnic table, especially if you’re a couple or a trio. It doesn’t work to pull the “we’re saving these seats for some people who won’t be here for half an hour” shenanigans. This isn’t a high school cafeteria.
Inside, it’s a small, two-room/two-level dive bar with dart boards on the exposed brick walls, a few televisions and a free jukebox -- a trend that I’m loving. The ever-changing menu features better-than-you’d expect brats cooked in DC Brau, arancini and killer mac and cheese.
DC Reynolds, 3628 Georgia Ave. NW. 202-506-7178. Open at 5 p.m. weekdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays.
