Traditional English ales and food (fish & chips, shepherd's pie) balance out the drab decor at this downtown pub, part of a Canadian chain.

I feel compelled to write even though I didn't pay for the meal I endured at E&C. First the service was extremely slow - it took more than 45 minutes to get our food. The waiter apologized unconvincingly and then just avoided our table until the food finally arrived. There were multiple mix-ups - one in my group received two bowls of soup! Worse still, my food was terrible. I had the chipotle chicken flatbread & salad. The salad was wilted and balsamic dressing was extremely bland. The chicken was rubbery because the sandwich had been left too long under the broiler - the cheese was scorched & the bread was burnt black at the edges. I would never go here again, & feel embarassed for our host who was polite but mortified at our experience.
This was my third visit to the Elephant and Castle. The food was fresh, portions were large, and a good value for the money. Our server was excellent. Very friendly, drinks and apps were served quickly. The new location at 19th and I Street opens in March 09. Can't wait to try it!
