An outdoor beer garden across the street from Nationals Park offers games and live music.

It's the best option in the immediate area for hanging out before or after the game. But it's the ONLY option other than the stadium itself. It's cheaper than stadium prices, but still way overpriced. It's also cramped and the music always at 11, though nobody usually seems to have interest in the bands. Admittedly I'm biased (O's fan in DC) but it's nowhere close to the experience at Pickles/Sliders complex outside Camden - a bigger more enjoyable crowd and 2 for $5 beers ($1 per if you're not picky). Stadiums like Wrigley, Coors, and PNC also have much better scene as well. If/when the neighborhood around Nats park fills in I think there will be potential for some fun options; but the Bullpen will have to do in the mean time.
Much better than what's going on inside the stadium and with the only outdoor liquor license in the city, it's great for hanging out with friends.
This bar is basically a giant tailgate. It has your standard beers, grilled food, cornhole, and a band. As the only option within easy proximity of the stadium, it's normally crowded. Nonetheless, I've had a good time everytime I've gone and think it's a perfect stop for pre-game hanging out with friends.
When I heard about a beer garden near the Nat's stadium, I was envisioning something like Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden in Queens, NY (with big steins of Czech and German Beer, good central European food, park like surroundings, waitresses in braids.etc.), instead I found a very loud parking lot with Bud on tap! Like the Nats, Bullpen is a low-budget, no thrills time, that disappoints very often. Not worth your time.
Because I'm usually coming in to the stadium straight from work, I don't have the time to transport my beer, my grill, and my cornhole set to the stadium. Great news! They have it there for you. It's essentially a tailgate party, but you have to pay for what you eat and drink. Yes, it is a merely a tent in a parking lot with a live (and loud) band playing, but that is all it really needs to be. You are about to sit outside in a loud stadium for 2-3 hours and pay $7 or more for a beer inside the stadium, so if you are complaining about what the Bullpen offers, you probably won't enjoy the game either. It is a nice addition to the game going experience. Besides, stopping in a for a beer after the games beats dealing with the metro crowd.
I've tipped a few in quite a few places around the Baltimore / DC area and this place ranks right at the bottom of all those places. Like I said if your use to drinking in parking lots cause you're not old enough to drink or just turned 21 then this place is the bomb!!! If you're over the age of 22 - you'd be better off drinking a few in your car before heading into the game. Cheaper and less hearing loss.
The Bullpen is reflective of the poor choices for beer & food in the stadium. The goal here should be variety as found in Baltimore. Hopefully over time, as the area develops, it will get better. For now though, I'll stay away from the Bullpen.
I think these reviewers are just too snobby for this place. True it's crowded, but that's a good thing. Even with the crowds, I've never had to wait more than 1 minute for a beer and the selection is better than just "Bud Light and Michelob Ultra". They also carry non-light beers like Bass Pale Ale (my favorite). If you're expecting a great time with friends, The Bullpen is perfect for you. If you expect a trendy lounge, what are you doing at a baseball game in the first place?
Like another person said, the music is way too loud. Not enough choices for beer.
I was there a couple of weeks ago with friends. They need to 1) Turn down the Music. There was no place you could go inside the Bullpen where you could talk without yelling and/or leaning your ear in. 2) Get a better selection of Beer. When I'm paying 8 or 9 dollars per beer, you better have a better selection than Bud Light and Michelob Ultra. 3) Put us some area boundaries and maybe some different flooring. When I was there, it seemed like we were all jammed into an asphalt parking lot. Having to move every 3 seconds for somebody to get through. A big walled asphalt parking lot with the crowd of a nightclub, with whatever music playing so loud you can't possible converse, while paying 9 dollars for a Bud Light.
It's the ONLY option outside of National's Park and I mean the only thing!!! It's a tent, it has portable jiffy johns, a gravel/dirt floor, and the appeal of a frat party. Were is all the so-called DEVELOPMENT in this part of town??? Pretty sad when the only bar option outside of a Major League ball park is a temporary tent.
